Muir Middle School has a wonderful and friendly environment amongst the teachers and the students. The academic programs in this school are high. Students have a choice to take band, eighth grade jazz band, choir, advanced computers, wood shop, home ec., and more. Just like any other band and choir classes, Muir's band and choir classes compete amongst themselves in band/choir festival and solo and ensamble. In almost every class students found their teachers had not only taught them the subject and different ways of studying, but how to apply some of the material to life. One of the best things about Muir is almost every day at lunch there is a teacher who goes around and passes out fliers about the next intramural. There are assigned days for students to come in after school to mingle amongst themselves while dancing, playing games or sports, making food, pumpkin carving, painting, or making other fun or wild things. Other fliers that are passed out during lunches are about the next trying out dates for sports. Muir competes in almost all of the sports, unless they have a low outcome of people signing up to play that year. At the end of the year, there is a set date for seventh graders, eighth graders and parents to come into school and get academical and sport related awards. Muir makes a big deal about recognizing the students who worked hard and rewards them with certificates. During this assembly the jazz band plays up-beat music in the background while the parents are coming in and finding a seat while their children sit in a designated spot. After half an hour of everyone getting situated the fun begins. The principal and vice principal take turns explaining the award and calls up every student's name who qualified. The qualifying students then walk to the front of the gym and wait to receive their award. The sixth graders, however, get their rewards at an assembly during the school day and parents may attend if they want to. When walking into Muir the first noticeable sites are how clean and fresh the environment happens to be. The cafeteria, gym, rooms, and facilities are cleaned on a regular biases. There are three sets of bathrooms at Muir which are located in the sixth grade hall, on the upstairs level, and in the lobby. If any facility has any repair needed or any type of graffiti the janitors locks that particular bathroom for an assigned amount of time. If the graffiti continues over time, even after the students were talked to, that bathroom will then be blocked off for the rest of the year. Muir always has ways for the parents to get involved if wanted to. Parents tend to help put intramurals together, help plan field trips, marches, concerts, plays, and much more. They can also help out by collecting the money and handing out raffle tickets for the possibility to win baskets of goodies the students put together. If the parent doesn't have the time to help out by being at the school and feels like they should be donating their time, that parent can always make a donation. Helping out with one intramural or one concert doesn't mean that the parent has signed their remaining time to the school. It's always a one time sign up and if wanted that parent can keep signing up to help out. Muir Middle School is a great school for starting out as a sixth grader or for transfer students. Any new student is always welcome and usually finds their place within two weeks. Students at Muir have a tendency to socialize with other students who may not be in their "group". Not to worry, these groups aren't the snobby groups that are often times seen in movies. Everyone tries to get along and if a student doesn't like another student most of the time they leave each other alone. Muir has a very low percentage of fights and the majority of the students tries to keep it that way. Muir is all around a great school for parents, teachers, and students.
